August Rides
Author Last Post
CCC Members:

The club ride for August have been posted on the CCC “Events” page at:

Click on “Aug” in the top right hand corner of the calendar to view the August rides.

All of the posted rides are official club rides.  That means that as a CCC member you are covered by both the CCC liability insurance policy and the CCC excess accident medical policy for incidents relating to this club rides.  For example, if you are sued by a driver, a pedestrian or even another bicycle rider for something they allege you did improperly on a club ride that caused them injury, the CCC insurance policy will generally pay to defend you and (subject to policy limits) for any judgement against you.  Likewise, if you are injured on a club ride and have out of pocket medical expenses (e.g., deductibles and co-payments) the club’s medical policy will generally cover those expenses subject to policy limits.

Important Caveat:  The club insurance only covers club members on club rides.  If you are on a group ride, even one led by a CCC ride leader, that is a "pick-up" or “informal" ride and is not posted on the CCC website, you have NO coverage under the CCC insurance.  For example, if you are CCC member leading a non-CCC ride and someone on the ride is injured and sues you (e.g., they allege that you picked an unsafe route), you will be on your own for the full coast of your defense and any judgement against you.  In the case of a crash with life treating injures that could easily be a six figure bill.

If you are currently leading a regular non-CCC ride and would like to make it a CCC ride so that you and the other club members on the ride have insurance coverage, please contact me.  The process for making a ride a club ride is simple and easy.  For the most part, you just have to be willing to follow some common sense safety guidelines.  Similarly, if anyone would like to start a new club ride, help out by being a co-ride leader for an existing club ride, or add a new pace group for an existing club ride, please contact me.  We need ride leaders - they are the lifeblood of the club.

Safety Tip of the Month:  Rear blinking bike lights have gotten increasing bright as LED technology has improved.  When you are riding by yourself, I encourage you to light up like a Christmas tree.  However, on a group ride, a blinking rear light can be very uncomfortable and distracting to riders behind you.  Please make sure that your rear light has a slight down angle when riding in a group.  Due to basic geometry, the cars behind should still be able to see the light, but it won’t blind the riders directly behind you.  Also, consider setting your rear light to "constant on" while riding with a group.  Finally, please be very careful running bike headlights on group rides as they can create a safety hazard by making it impossible for the riders in front of you to see oncoming cars and trucks in their mirrors.   Of course, if you are riding at night, you still need lights even on a group ride.
