ROUTE CHANGE!

Due to bridge replacements starting this week in Brooks County, we have changed the route for the road century only - no other routes are affected. The MapMyRide link for the road century has now been modified, and new printable static maps with cue sheets are also linked in. (See below.) Of course, maps will be provided in packets as well.

Spaghetti 100! October 30 2010

The Capital City Cyclists is proud to present the 27th Annual Spaghetti 100 on Saturday, October 30, 2010. Road riders will have options of a 100 mile and 100 kilometer route. This year the off-pavement options are being upgraded, with the new Red Hills Epic (85 mile), Metric Century Challenge (60+ mile), and Dirt Epicette (42 mile), rest stops, route marking and SAG support.

All rides leave from the Miccosukee Community Center (see map), and ride north through scenic North Florida and South Georgia. The road routes take riders through historic Thomasville and Boston, Georgia, then through Monticello, Florida. The dirt routes are non-technical, following the beautiful canopied clay roads through the heart of classic Red Hills plantation country. (Note that a few miles of the dirt routes are on paved roads.) In the event of rain, which renders the clay roads more technical, dirt riders can switch to the metric or century road ride.

Registration for any of the ride options includes a T-shirt (if registered by October 17th), a continental breakfast, food stops, lunch, a delicious spaghetti feast at the end of the ride, and a massage from CORE Institute Staff.

Ride Options
  • Century. The ride that started it all - 100 miles on paved rural roads of North Florida and South Georgia
  • Metric. A 100 kilometer version of the classic paved road ride
  • Epic. This is a new dirt ride for experts only, consisting of 85 miles on mostly dirt roads in the Red Hills country
  • Challenge. A 60+ mile version of the Epic, similar to the dirt metric we have offered for several years
  • Epicette. A 42 mile ride using a portion of the Epic route, intended for riders with less experience riding off-pavement

The Century, Metric, and Epic rides will all use the same rest stops, including Thomasville, Boston (lunch), Olive Church, and TS Green (Coke stop). The Challenge uses the last three, and the Epicette uses Thomasville only. The start times for the various options will vary in order to coordinate arrival times at the rest stops and at the end of the ride in Miccosukee. Please see below for more details.

Rules & Regs
Helmets are required for all riders. Riders under 18 years of age must be accompanied by parent or adult cyclist at all times and have their LAB liability release form signed by a parent or guardian.

The cost for the Spaghetti 100 is $35 for current members of Capital City Cyclists and $40 for non-CCC members. Children age 17 or under ride free when accompanied by a parent with a CCC family membership. The cost for children of non-CCC members is $20. Registration includes a continental breakfast, a lunch stop, road food at the rest stops, a delicious spaghetti feast, support vehicles, and a T-Shirt for those registering before October 17th. After the early registration date, add $10 for all categories. Add $5.00 for valet (paper) registration.

Parking is limited. If possible, please carpool to Miccosukee. Since the community center is located in a residential area, we will want to be as quiet as possible in the morning. Because of the hardwood floors, we ask that you not wear cleated cycling shoes in the community center.

The Post-Ride feast will be served at the Miccosukee Community Center. Spaghetti (meat sauce or vegetarian), salad, and bread will be offered along with dessert and drinks. Additional meals for non-riders can be purchased along with registration.

Registration
There are two options for Spaghetti 2010 registration - self-service/online and valet service.

  • Self service: Register online with active.com. This option is encouraged and there will be no extra charge.
  • Valet service: If you prefer, a CCC volunteer will manually enter your data for you. Send in your paper application along with a check on the amount listed on the paper form, which includes a $5.00 fee for Valet registration service. The paper form is being mailed to all previous participants and is available for download here.

Pre-registration deadline is October 17th. Anyone registering after October 17th will be assessed a late fee of $10 and is not guaranteed a T-shirt. Should you need to cancel, Capital City Cyclists will refund 90% of your entry fee until October 17th.

Walk-up registration (at packet pickup or ride start) will be allowed until the maximum of 350 riders is reached. (See "who's riding" link for numbers.) Late and valet registration fees apply.

Packet Pick-Up
Ride packets can be picked up on Friday, October 29th, from 10:30 AM to 6:00 PM at Sunshine Cycles, 2784 Capital Circle, Tallahassee, (850) 422-1075, (see map). Packets may also be picked up at the Miccosukee Community Center (see map) at the event.

Paved Specifics

Paved routes will be fully supported as usual. We have SAG drivers, Radio Communications, and EMT on patrol throughout the course. If you or another cyclist in your group needs assistance, please wait for one of these to come by or call ride HQ for message relay.

  • Riders with "tri-bars" are requested to keep hands on handlebars (not on the "tri-bars") when riding in a group.
  • The road riders this year may see some mud-splattered bikers with fat tires wandering around out of their element (i.e., on pavement). These are likely to be participants in the dirt road option looking for either (1) a rest stop or (2) help of some sort. Give them a hand!
  • Ride HQ phone: 850-510-5575

Maps, cue sheets, elevation profiles, and GPS coordinates for the paved Century and Metric rides are now complete. Thank you Al Parker!

Have a safe and fun ride!

Dirt Specifics

The dirt road rides can present problems, especially for novice dirt riders, in two ways.

First, the dirt roadways are much more susceptible to recent and day-of-ride weather conditions. This affects not only the rider experience but can make the roads impassable even to 4 wheel drive vehicles. Therefore our ability to provide SAG services is adversely affected when they might be needed the most. Our inability to control weather conditions (try as we might) means we cannot plan a reliable motorized SAG system on the dirt routes.

And second, the dirt route navigation can be problematic due to incorrect or missing signage and the lack of route marking with paint.

We therefore are instituting procedures for dirt riders that will enhance safety and the overall experience of the day. All dirt riders are asked to cooperate with the following:

  • Check Out and In. Due to the lack of continuous SAG and Radio support on the dirt routes, we ask that the dirt riders check out prior to the start and check in when returned to Miccosukee.
  • Buddy System. Novice riders and riders who are unfamilier with the route are asked to use the buddy system: establish a riding partner [your "buddy"] with whom you can ride compatibly and agree between the two of you that you will stay together for the entire ride, unless an emergency dictates separation. Note: a buddy group can consist of more than two riders, which enhances safety even more. Again, the buddy group should agree to ride together unless emergency dictates the group split. In the case of a split, the portion of the group remaining with the emergency and the portion riding away should each consist of more than one rider, if at all possible.
  • Expert Help. Experienced riders who are familier with the routes are asked to be vigilant in helping others, particularly with navigation and emergency situations.
  • YOYO. All dirt riders - You're On Your Own with respect to flats, spare tubes, and other bike failures.
  • Motorized Help at Pavement Crossings. If you need help and other riders cannot provide it, get to the nearest intersection of the dirt and paved routes. The paved routes will have SAG support, EMT, Radio Communications, and other amenities patrolling. Flag them down.
  • Cut-off times along the routes. For any number of reasons, including deteriorating road conditions and navigational difficulties, dirt riders may find themselves significantly behind a reasonable schedule permitting the timely return to Miccosukee and dinner. Therefore there are mandatory cutoff times at several locations on the dirt routes. These are:
    • 12:00noon Boston Lunch Stop: All dirt riders departing Boston after 12:00 noon will be routed along the shorter Challenge route back to Miccosukee.
    • 1:00pm 12 Mile Post Road x Boston Highway: All dirt riders departing this intersection after 1:00pm must take one of the shorter routes back to Miccosukee, either the Challenge dirt route [27 miles dirt] or the Century paved route [27 miles paved].
    • 3:00pm Simpson Road Rest Stop: All riders departing this last rest stop after 3:00pm must take the paved route to Miccosukee [approximately 10 miles on paved road].
These cutoff times should ensure that all riders are off the courses and in Miccosukee in time for the last seating of dinner at 4:00pm.
  • Ride HQ phone: 850-510-5575

We ask that all dirt riders adhere to these advisories and in general look out for each other. It's a long ride for everyone, but especially those new to dirt riding or unfamilier with the roads. Be careful out there.

Dirt Maps & Cue Sheets

Here is a master map (provided in RideWithGPS format) and route-specific cue sheets for each of the dirt options:

If you (or your "buddy") has GPS support on the bike, please download the GPS coordinate data from the map link above in preparation for the event. This will be a valuable resource for you and everyone that you are near during the event. Many thanks to Jimbo Smart for creating the Epic Map and to Rick Ashton for creating the three cue sheets.
